Rockal 8-foot XPS shiplap boards are the long-format version of our 3" extruded polystyrene panels, sized to span standard wall heights with fewer horizontal seams. The 96"×24" footprint covers 16 ft² per board — double the coverage of a 2×4' board — cutting installation time and seam count on larger exterior walls, foundation walls, and below-grade assemblies. The shiplap edge interlocks board-to-board for a continuous thermal layer with no cold seams, and the closed-cell structure resists water absorption and holds its R-value in damp conditions. At R15 and 3" thick, these boards meet common exterior continuous insulation requirements while offering the compressive strength needed for slab and foundation use. Best suited to two-person crews or solo installers comfortable managing a longer panel, the 2×8' format trades some solo handling ease for fewer seams and faster coverage on bigger runs. Score and snap with a utility knife, fasten through to framing, and pair with most cladding systems for a continuous insulated envelope.

XPS is the right call anywhere the insulation will face moisture, ground contact, or sustained load — below-grade foundation walls, under-slab applications, exterior continuous insulation over sheathing, and any assembly where the material might get wet or bear weight over time. Its closed-cell structure resists water absorption and holds its R-value in damp conditions, while its compressive strength stands up to backfill pressure or slab loads without crushing. For above-grade interior walls or areas with no moisture or load exposure, other insulation types (fiberglass, rockwool) are often more cost-effective.

Fewer seams. An 8-foot board covers 16 ft² in one piece — double a 4-foot board — which means half as many horizontal joints to align, fasten, and tape across the same wall area. On a standard 8' wall height, one 2×8' board can run the full height in a single piece, where a 2×4' board needs two pieces stacked with a seam in between. Fewer seams means less tape, less time spent aligning boards, and fewer potential points for air movement or thermal bridging — worthwhile on larger runs where speed and seam count matter more than solo handling ease.

Handling. The 2×4' format is light and short enough for one person to position, hold, and fasten without help — the 2×8' board is longer and more awkward to manage solo, especially on vertical foundation walls or in tight crawlspaces. If you're working alone or in confined access areas, the smaller board is usually faster in practice even with the extra seams. Crews of two or more, or larger open wall runs, are where the 8-foot board's seam savings really pay off.

The main difference is compressive strength and water performance. XPS has a tighter closed-cell structure that gives it higher compressive strength (300 kPa in our boards), so it holds up better under sustained load — this matters for under-slab and foundation applications where the material may be supporting soil backfill or slab weight over the long term without crushing or losing thickness. XPS also absorbs less water over time, so it holds its R-value better in damp or buried conditions. EPS is typically less expensive and still performs well for many above-grade applications, but XPS is the stronger choice anywhere ground contact, moisture, or sustained load is a factor.

In practical terms, it's how much sustained load the board can bear before it starts to compress and lose thickness (and R-value) over time. For under-slab or foundation-perimeter installs, this matters because the board has soil, concrete, or structural loads pressing on it for the life of the building — a higher compressive rating means it holds its shape and thermal performance under that load instead of gradually flattening out.

The difference is how adjacent boards meet at the seam. Square-cut edges butt flush, edge to edge, in a straight line — simple to manufacture and easy to trim on site, but the seam is left as a straight gap that needs taping or sealing to perform well. Shiplap edges have a stepped lip on one side and a matching groove on the other, so boards overlap at the seam instead of butting flush — this closes the gap that a butt joint leaves, cutting down on air movement and thermal bridging, and reduces or eliminates the need for seam tape. On an 8-foot board, shiplap's air-sealing benefit compounds over fewer, longer seams — one of the reasons it's the standard edge across our XPS line.
